DETERMINING THE DISCHARGE USING SURFACE FLOW VELOCITY IN OPEN CHANNEL FLOWS
Project no. 21464 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2020
Summary
The main purpose of this research project is to contribute to the controlled use of water resources by reducing the number and cost of field measurements with the help of 21st century technologies. In the study, it is aimed to determine the flow amount with the closest value to the truth by obtaining the surface flow rate of the free surface flows with the help of video visuals. For this purpose, experiments were carried out in Ege University Civil Engineering Department Hydraulics Laboratory using different channel properties and tracer types. In addition, the results of the experiments carried out under natural flow conditions were compared with the experimental results. The experiments carried out in the first step of the study focused on the tracer size and the tracer type. In order to analyze the effect of flow conditions, first of all, the experiments were carried out in a flat rectangular flow bed under conditions. ADV (Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry) device and LSPIV (Large Scale Partical Velocimetry) method were used for velocity measurements made in this section. The relationship between ADV and LSPIV findings was converted into a numerical expression. Field experiments were then conducted to test the success of the obtained expression on real flow beds. PIV (particle image velocimetry), which we can define as particle imaging velocity method, is based on comparing sequential images in a certain region. The LSPIV method, on the other hand, aims to analyze images taken from a relatively far distance from PIV. The method, which has positive results at the micro level, aims to solve this problem with medium viewing distance and even higher resolution satellite images in the future. For this purpose, the average velocity was obtained for the section where point velocity measurements were made and this value was compared with the LSPIV method findings. LSPIV method is a method that aims to obtain velocity vectors by considering the effects of perspective and/or distance on image distortion with the help of images taken from different points. In this research, different sized samples of different materials were used as tracers while applying the LSPIV method to obtain the surface flow rates. One of the parameters that will affect the success of the LSPIV method is the material type and size of the tracer. The effect of material type and size was tested using point velocity measurements made with the ADV device. For open channel flow velocity measurements, both the geometry of the section and the bed material properties were evaluated as variables in the second part of the study. In field studies, it is aimed to develop studies on natural rivers by using drones (UAV, unmanned aerial vehicle) that can record and/or transfer images. This project analyzes the LSPIV measurement method in depth and tries to determine its role in the more careful use of water, which is the common property of humanity.
