Monitoring of Recreational Angling Fisheries in İzmir Bay and determination of Consumabilty of Caught Fish
Project no. 549 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016
Summary
This study was carried out between July 2016 and June 2018 in inner part of İzmir Bay. It was aimed that determination of line fishing status, amateur angling profiles and consumability of fish which were caught in İzmir Bay. Survey, sampling operations and laboratory analysis methods were used in the project. In surveys 1000 amateur fishermens were interviewed. Fish species which were caught, socio-economic sturucture of amateur fishermens and fishing points were determined. Sampling operations were conducted with trammel nets, combine trammel nets, line fishing and trolling montly for a year Sea bream (Sparus aurata, L 1758), Golden grey mullet ( Liza aurata, Risso 1810), Leaping mullet (Liza saliens, Risso 1810), Flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus, L. 1758) Annular seabream (Diplodus annularis L. 1758), Horse mackerel (Trachhurus trachhurus L. 1758) ve Shi drum (Umbrina cirrosa L. 1758), Sand steenbras (Lithognathus mormyrus L. 1758) species were analysed according to consumability levels of dioksin, heavy metal, pestisids and total koliform and fecal koliform. The project study on the consumption of species caught from the inner bay has shown that in there are some factors that put human health in danger in terms of seasonal and species-based especially the accumulation of dioxin, mineral content (heavy metal) values and sea water criteria which can be permissible for fishery. Although fishery activities is not permitted for professional fishermen in the inner bay due to pollution in the inner bay, the fishing activity which has been happening for many years in a prohibited because of the pollution, is still continue illegal by amateur fishermen. Although this fishing activity does not aim for a commercial purpose, the individual consumption of the fishers and secretly sales to the counter of restaurant and fish sellers on a person basis may spreads the potential risks. Within the scope of the project dioxin analyzes were carried out in line with the samples made in sampling by 2 months’ periods. This was the reason of budget constraints of the project. However, in three analytical periods during the whole project, the risk of dioxin residues exceeding the consumable limits in one of the sampling in annular seabream (Diplodus annularis) has shown that the health risk. Especially due to the heavy metal content Gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) and Sand steenbras (Lithognathus mormyrus L. 1758) which can be declared as the main target species, can be identified as the riskiest species.
