The geographical aspects of the migrations to İzmir and demographic features

Project no. 947 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016

Summary

This research reveals that İzmir has become a province with increasing population mobility in recent years. In point of fact, while the population migrating to Izmir in 2008-2012 was 560880, this figure increased to 614412 in 2013-2017 period. On the other hand, while 476485 people migrated from İzmir in 2008-2012 period, this figure increased to 508.195 in 2013-2017 period. These figures show that the volume of immigration of İzmir by the previous periods has grown and has almost become a province that has been migrating as much as its immigration. One of the results that we have achieved is that İzmir, which has been the city with the highest net migration after Istanbul for many years, has seen significant changes in both the net domestic migration and the geographical distribution of the net migration. İzmir province, which has been the province with the highest net migration after Istanbul for many years, lost this feature according to the address based population registration system data between 2008-2017. The cumulative net migration data between 2008 and 2017 clearly show that Ankara, Antalya and Kocaeli provinces have left İzmir behind and received much higher net migration. In this decline, Izmir's long-standing economic stagnation, limited employment opportunities and high unemployment rates were effective. Another important result is the geographical dimension of Izmir's net migration. The results of this study show that the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolian regions have continued their predominant position in the migrations of Izmir. thus Izmir has become a center receiving migrant from all regions of Turkey.
