Project no. 914 · Status: Kapanmış · 2017
Summary
This phenomenological qualitative study aimed to understand the experiences of women with low socio-economic status about the methods of contraception and to evaluate the family planning services based on the experiences and opinions of health care personnel. Criterion sampling and maximum variation sampling, two of the purposeful sampling strategies, were used for sampling. The study included 53 women who were married and had experience of using contraception and 12 healthcare personnel who provided family planning services in various healthcare institutions. The data were collected using semi-structured questionnaires through individual in-depth interviews and focus-group interviews. Voice recordings of the interviews were transcribed into text and then analyzed with MaxQda 2018 qualitative data analysis program. A coding paradigm of grounded theory and the coding paradigm of Straus and Corbin were used in the qualitative data analysis. Four main themes were designated based on the analysis of the data obtained from women: i) family planning decision, ii) knowledge and experiences about contraception methods, iii) experiences about using family planning services, and iv) the effect of gender on using these services. Likewise, four main themes were designated based on the analysis of the data obtained from health care personnel: i) demand for family planning services, ii) provision of family planning services, iii) working environment and conditions, iv) organizational and political transformation in the provision of family planning services. In conclusion, the demand for family planning services is high among women although affected by socio-economic and cultural factors. Women experience difficulties in the use of contraception methods and in access to services due to individual, social, and service-related factors. There is a shortage of services due to various reasons, especially in family health centers. Keywords: Family Planning, Service Use, Service Provision, Qualitative Study
