INVESTIGATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CAPNOCYTOPHAGA AND BLACK STAIN IN CHILDREN'S TEETH
Project no. 424 · Status: Kapanmış · 2017
Summary
The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between black stain in children’s teeth and Capnocytophaga spp. and members of human oral microbiota. Some references report that members of Capnocytophaga inhibit proliferation of some organisims like Streptococcus mutans. On the other hand, the dental caries index in children with black stain is lower than control groups. Therefore, the Capnocytophaga number in children with and without black stain was determined. Besides, it was also investigated that whether there is a relationship between Capnocytophaga spp. numbers and Streptococcus mutans numbers or not. Samples were taken from patients between 3-12 years of age who applied to Ege University, School of Dentisty, Department of Pediatric Dentistry in March-May 2017. Black stain samples from 44 patients and dental plaque samples from 44 patients were taken. The samples in the Stuart Transport Medium were brought to the laboratory in the same day within the shortest time. Capnocytophaga spp. was isolated on VCAT medium, Streptococcus mutans was isolated on Mitis Salivarus Agar medium by spreading plaque method and bacteria numbers were calculated. These suspicious Capnocytophaga spp. and Streptococcus mutans isolates were identified by VITEK II. For the Capnocytophaga spp. isolates, gram stain, catalase and oxidase and indole tests were also performed. In conclusion, there was significantly higher diversity in Capnocytophaga spp. levels in children with black stain (p?0,01), there was not a significant difference in S. mutans between the groups (p=0,9). It seems to be there is a correlation between low caries index in black stain group and high Capnocytophaga spp. number.
