SEROTONIN-RELATED GENE VARIATIONS IN SUICIDE CASES
Project no. 625 · Status: Kapanmış · 2015
Summary
Aim: Several studies have evaluated the relationship between the 5 hydroxytryptamine (serotonin) 2A receptor (5-HTR2A) gene polymorphisms and the suicidal behavior. However, no study has been conducted to investigate the role of the 5-HTR2A gene polymorphism in cases of successful suicides in relation to the psychiatric drug use. Therefore, in our study, we aimed to examine the difference in genotype and allele frequencies of the two different serotonergic polymorphisms (A1438G and T102C) of the 5-HTR2A gene of the suicide victims, in correlation with the use of psychiatric drugs. Method: The study was conducted on 100 suicide victims whose deaths were caused by mechanical asphyxia and brain ischemia and 45 healthy control subjects. Peripheral blood samples were taken from the subjects for cycle sequencing. The 5 HTR2A gene A1438G and T102C polymorphisms were sequenced by Sanger's Method. Pearson Chi-Square test was used to compare genotype and allele frequencies between the suicides and control groups. Results: When the genotype and allele frequencies of the rs6313 and rs6311 polymorphisms of the 5HT2A receptor gene of healthy control subjects were compared with the suicide cases that resulted in death, it was found that there was no statistically significant difference between them. In addition, when the cases of the suicides using the psychiatric drugs, suicide cases that did not use the psychiatric drugs and healthy control subjects who did not use the psychiatric drug were compared separately, it was observed that the genotype and allele frequencies of the rs6313 and rs6311 polymorphisms were not different. Conclusion: It has been concluded that the polymorphisms of 5 HT2A receptor genes T102C (rs6313) and A1438G (rs6311) have no effect on the suicides in the suicide cases, including those using psychiatric drugs. Results in terms of being the first serotonin related gene polymorphism study in Türkiye is very important.
