Use of the Thermoplastic Based on Ground Tire Rubber in Bitumen Modification
Project no. 1311 · Status: Kapanmış · 2017
Summary
Bitumen is a viscoelastic material that has time and temperature depended behavior. Thus, in flexible pavement, where bitumen is used as binder, rutting and thermal cracking is occurred (with traffic load) under high temperature and low temperature conditions. Deteriorations occurred in flexible highway before their economical lifespan leads to an increment in maintenance cost or reconstruction of flexible pavement. Besides, the traffic loads applied to flexible pavements has been increasing due to increasing number of heavy trucks and road haulage. Thus, modification (mainly by the polymers) of bitumen so as to improve performance of flexible highway and eventually increase the temperature range that ideal for a flexible pavement is required. In this study, Thermoplastic dynamic vulcanizate modifier was obtained by employing recycled high density polyethylene (HDPE) ground tire rubber (GTR), ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) and bitumen. Within the scope of the project, TDV modified bitumens were investigated by means of Superpave test program. High and low performance grade (PG) of binders were determined. By this means, the physical effect of TDV modifier on bitumen were studied by using roll thin film oven (RTFO), rotational viscometer (RV), dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), bending beam rheometer (BBR). The findings show the usability of TDV polymer in bitumen modification.
