Summary

Around 96% of the goat population in Turkey consists of Hair goats. However, these animals do not produce the desired levels of meat and milk despite their substantial population. Several candidate genes that influence the yield characteristics of Hair goats have been identified. Therefore, this study aims to determine the environmental factors that affect the live weight and body measurements of Hair goat kids in the Aegean region. This study investigates polymorphisms in the GHR gene that could affect the characteristics of Hair goat kids raised in the public domain. The animal material for this thesis study comprised a total of 120 kids from two enterprises in the Karaburun district of Izmir province. The genetic and phenotypic correlations between live weight and body measurements were determined in a range of 0.10 to 0.99 Correlations between live weight and body measurements, excluding ear length, were found to be significant (p<0.01). Following PCR-RFLP analysis of the GHR gene, two genotypes, AA and AB, were identified. However, no significant impact of these genotypes on the studied characteristics was observed.
