EFFECTS OF PROBIOTICS ON METABOLIC BIOMARKERS, INFLAMMATION AND ANTIOXIDANT SYSTEM IN PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS
Project no. 20200 · Status: Kapanmış · 2020
Summary

Objective: The aim of this randomized controlled clinical trial was to investigate the effects of probiotics on glucose metabolism, inflammation and antioxidant system in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Materials and Methods: This study is a randomized, controlled, prospective clinical trial. The study included 80 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus aged 35-65 years who applied to the Internal Medicine outpatient clinic of Ege University Faculty of Medicine Hospital and agreed to participate in our study. All subjects were ensured to maintain a stable dietary habit and physical activity during the study. The probiotic group was given a probiotic preparation once a day (n = 39) in addition to the treatment they used for 12 weeks, and the control group (n = 38) continued the same treatment. Sociodemographic and medical data of the patients were recorded. At baseline and at the end of the 12th week, anthropometric measurements were made and fasting/supplementary blood glucose, lipid profile, A1c, hsCRP, ceruloplasmin, glutathione, malondialdehyde levels were measured.

Results: The mean age of the patients was 55.38 ± 6.40 years, 42,86% female. There was no significant difference between the groups except for fasting blood glucose. There was a significant decrease in AKG levels in the probiotic group compared to the control group.

Conclusion: As a result of our study, it was found that probiotic use in patients with T2DM had no statistically significant effect on metabolic, inflammatory and antioxidant systems except for AKG levels. Longer-term studies on this subject are needed.
