Summary

In this study, the performance analysis of steel composite columns embedded in concrete subjected to fire was carried out supported by experimental data. The experimental study was conducted in the laboratory at an average temperature of 550°C, which is representative of residential fire conditions. Under these conditions, the members were heated and then loaded in combined flexural and axial load to evaluate their strength. The experimental data formed the basis for modeling in the ABAQUS program.

The aim of the study was to investigate the behavior of steel composite columns embedded in fire-exposed concrete for two concrete types with different strengths, 25 MPa and 40 MPa. For the section design, a 20cmx20cm concrete section and an IPE100 steel profile, which were used by the researchers in their previous projects, were chosen. Accordingly, four experimental elements for each concrete strength and eight specimens in total were produced, one of which was a control element. The elements were subjected to a combination of axial compressive and flexural loading to evaluate their performance when used as both columns and beams. Changes in the mechanical properties of the fired concrete were investigated for their effect on the bearing capacity of the composite columns.

The results of the study showed a reduction in the load carrying capacity of steel composite columns embedded in fire-exposed concrete. The degree of this reduction was determined and evaluated separately for concrete types with different strength values.
