Summary

Ultrasonography is unique in that it can serve as a clinical and educational tool. However, the integration of point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) into undergraduate medical education is limited around the world. In our country, there is no integration of POCUS training in the undergraduate medical education program at any medical school. The aim of this study is to present the integration study of POCUS implementation in the undergraduate medical education program and the students' opinions about this training.

The study group for this survey research consists of 1st year students (N: 411) studying in the 2019-2020 academic year and 2nd year students (N: 386) studying in the 2022-2023 academic year at Ege University Faculty of Medicine. A convenient sampling method was used in the study. A questionnaire form was developed for students to evaluate their focused ultrasonography training. The data were analyzed with SPSS 25.0 software, and descriptive statistics were calculated.

In accordance with the structure of the Ege University Faculty of Medicine education program, POCUS trainings, limited to the relevant 11 skill objectives, were vertically integrated into the six-year education program. In the 2019-2020 academic year, in Stage 1 Block 1 (1st year) Introduction to Medical Sciences Block, theoretical lectures on "Fundamentals of Ultrasonography" and "Ultrasonography in Non-cardiac Clinical Implementations" were started, followed by practical training in small groups. In the 2022–2023 academic year, theoretical and practical POCUS trainings were integrated into the education program to cover the 4th year clinical trainings. Students' satisfaction with the focused ultrasonography education was determined to be 98.5% for 2019–2020 and 98.9% for 2022–2023.

In this study, POCUS trainings were integrated into the undergraduate medical education program and successfully implemented. The first outcomes were interpreted and presented as an exemplary practice.
