Summary

Sustainable chemistry aims to utilize natural resources instead of synthetic chemicals, consume less energy, and achieve maximum efficiency through green chemistry-based processes. Collagen and gelatin are obtained from leather waste, and these products are environmentally friendly biopolymeric materials with numerous potential applications. While catalytic reactions are important for green chemistry, the introduction of biopolymer-supported catalytic systems using biologically active polyphenols, which are readily available and/or readily biodegradable, has brought superior properties such as higher yields, economic advantages, and waste reduction/reuse/recycling. Certain properties of biopolymers, such as renewability, ease of preparation, hydrophobic/hydrophilic characteristics, and the ability to disperse metal nanoparticles, make their use attractive. The reduction of nitrobenzene and its derivatives to aniline by catalytic hydrogenation is of industrial importance because it is a widely used process for the production of dyes and pharmaceutical intermediates. This reaction is primarily carried out in vapor and liquid phase processes, while high reaction temperatures and high pressures are generally required for the reduction of nitrobenzene. Therefore, the discovery of new catalytic systems capable of catalyzing nitrobenzene and its derivatives under mild reaction conditions has gained significant importance in recent years. In this study, the catalytic reduction of nitrobenzene and its derivatives will be achieved using gelatin derived from animal skin waste, polyphenol-immobilized collagen (with cross-linking), and a new catalytic system under mild, environmentally friendly conditions in an aqueous environment. It is anticipated that this study will contribute to both academia and industry.
