Summary

Water is an important natural resource for life. Today, water pollution has reached critical levels, especially due to urban and industrial waste. Textile and apparel manufacturing consumes large amounts of water and generates a significant amount of wastewater during chemical processing. For these reasons, it is becoming more and more important to reuse clean water and to optimize the content of the wastewater. It is necessary to evaluate the chemical composition and radiological properties of the recycled water before it is fed back into the system for reuse or discharged as waste.

In this study, an ecological risk analysis based on the Potential Ecological Risk Index calculation has been performed using wastewater heavy metal concentraton data from a textile manufacturing facility that includes knitting, dyeing, finishing, cutting and sewing processes.

For this purpose, sample collection was made in two different seasons, from three different points within the production facility. Samples were collected in triplicate. Concentrations of the naturally occurring radionuclide Ra-226 and toxic metals As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn and Hg were determined in the samples. The collector chamber method was used for Ra-226 determination, whereas As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn and Hg were measured with ICP-MS.

It can be concluded from the results of heavy metal measurements that the highest pollution in the production process of the textile manufacturing company is at the output of the dyehouse. Similarly, it has been determined that the water discharged from the wastewater treatment plant has a higher amount of radionuclides than the clean water fed into the system from the plant well water inlet. On the other hand, according to the ecological risk index results; even if a medium risk is detected for some heavy metals at the dyehouse output, the final discharge point is at a low ecological risk level.
