Removal of Bromate (BrO3-) from Aqueous Solutions by Aliquat 336 Impregnated Adsorbent

Project no. 23623 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2022

Summary

In this study, removal of bromate (BrO₃⁻) from aqueous solutions using Aliquat 336 ionic liquid impregnated polymeric sorbent was investigated. The effect of sorbent dosage and initial solution pH on the removal of BrO₃⁻ was examined. Additionally, ion exchange mechanism and reaction kinetics were modeled through sorption isotherms and kinetic studies. Bromate analyses were performed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).

As a result of experiments conducted with Aliquat 336 impregnated polymeric sorbent, the optimum sorbent dosage for BrO₃⁻ removal was determined to be 0.2 g, with a working pH of 6. Kinetic studies revealed that the ion exchange kinetics of the sorbent were quite rapid, with 88% of BrO₃⁻ ions being removed within 30 minutes. It was found that the BrO₃⁻ removal with the prepared sorbent followed pseudo-second-order kinetics in kinetic studies, and in equilibrium studies, BrO₃⁻ removal conformed to the Langmuir isotherm. Thermodynamic studies with the prepared sorbents showed that the removal of BrO₃⁻ was endothermic. Regeneration studies indicated that the sorbent could be regenerated with 0.5 NaCl.

Keywords: Bromate removal, Polymeric sorbent, Aliquat 336, Ion exchange kinetic
