IRIDIUM CATALYZED HYDROGEN TRANSFER REACTIONS

Project no. 23767 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2022

Summary

Alcohols and ketones are important compounds used extensively in organic synthesis. In recent years, the method called transfer hydrogenation (TH) has emerged as an alternative to traditional hydrogenation reactions performed using H2 gas. TH can be defined as the transfer of hydrogen obtained from a hydrogen source that is not H2 gas (usually alcohols or formic acid) to the molecule to be reduced. Some of the most important known advantages of transfer hydrogenation are that it does not use hydrogen gas, which is flammable and needs to be stored at high pressures, and it uses cheap and easily accessible alcohols as hydrogen sources, and the recyclability of the by-product formed in the reaction. In the presented project, the synthesis of alcohols will be carried out by catalytic transfer hydrogenation of ketones using N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) iridium complexes as catalysts. One of the most important points of this study will be the comprehensive investigation of the effect of the changing electronic properties of NHC-Ir complexes, which have electron-donating or electron-withdrawing groups on the N atoms in the NHC skeleton and on the back of the azole ring, on their catalytic activities in TH reactions. Afterward, the substrate scale will be expanded via the catalyst determined as active.
