Development of Environmentally Friendly Process with Green Extraction Technology

Project no. 30846 · Status: Kapanmış · 2023

Summary

In this study, the extraction of lipids from the microalga Chlorococcum novae-angliae using environmentally friendly extraction techniques was investigated. First, the effect of nitrogen availability on lipid production in Chlorococcum novae-angliae microalgae was examined. Subsequently, the efficiencies of Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE) and Microwave-Assisted Extraction (MAE) methods were compared, and their effects on lipid production were evaluated. The optimizations of UAE and MAE processes were carried out by considering variables such as biomass-to-solvent ratio, temperature, extraction duration, power, and cycle. For UAE, the maximum yield was recorded as 0.026 ± 0.001 g lipid/g wet biomass under the optimal conditions determined as a biomass-to-solvent ratio of 1:25, 180 W power, 20 kHz frequency, a 2 minute extraction duration, and a 1 second cycle. For MAE, the optimal conditions were recorded as a biomass-to-solvent ratio of 1:30, 300 W power, 35 °C temperature, and a 2 minute extraction duration. The results demonstrated that UAE provided a higher yield of saturated fatty acids (SFAs), making it suitable for biofuel production, while MAE resulted in a higher content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), which is valuable for the food and health industries. These findings highlight the applicability of green extraction methods in sustainable energy production and eco-friendly biotechnological applications.
