A Study of the Farghana Version of the Bozoğlan Legend
Project no. 29540 · Status: Kapanmış · 2023
Summary
<p>This projects aims at transliteration, translation and publication in Turkish of a newly found manuscript, of which a copy is held by the project owner. The manuscript was found in the Ferghana region and had been written in Chagatai Turkic in Arabic scripts. It contains a Central Asian legend known widely as the dastan of Bozoğlan. Various versions of the legend were known and published beginning from the year 1910, but those are not based on original manuscripts. The manuscript subject to this project seems to represent an original version, without some later additions and distortions. The real picture will be seen after a detailed comparative study of the different versions. The subject of the text is based on some events in post-Timurid Central Asia, but there are some extensions, being compatible with its nature, including the references to Köroğlu. Since a new version or manuscript has not been found for a long time in Central Asia, this project indeed means announcement of a new discovery. The project process contains firstly a transliteration from the Arabic to Latin scripts, then the text will be translated to Turkish. There will be a section about the manuscript and a comparison of the other versions. Thus, with the faximile, transliteration, translation and examination parts, the study will contain four parts. The study will be given to the Institute for the Turkic World Studies at Ege University, and this prestigious manuscript will be published by our institution. Besides, a promotory paper in English will be written to announce it to the global reader.</p>
