DEVELOPMENT OF COMPOSITE PIPE REINFORCED WITH TUBULAR WOVEN PREFORM
Project no. 1277 · Status: Kapanmış · 2018
Summary
Textile materials which are manufactured for their technical performances are called technical textiles. According to technical textiles sector report which is published by Republic of Turkey Ministry of Economy, China took the first place in technical textile export in 2012. China’s portion was 23.5% in worldwide technical textiles export in 2012 whereas this portion was only 1.4% for Turkey. Although technical textile production increases every year in Turkey, product variety is still very limited. Turkey’s technical textile export is intensely focused on nonwoven textile goods. It is important to diversify the outcomes in order to maintain the competitiveness of the sector. The aim of Turkey’s textile export strategy was stated as “being a leader country by making production which has high added value and based on design and technology”. The importance of technical textiles matches up with this aim. Added value of technical textiles is greater than conventional ready to wear garments and its return for government economy and its maintainability are obvious. Previously, technical textiles were used only in rope, sack, and sail fabric and felt production but today they are used variously from agriculture to construction, from transportation to defense industry and health sector. On the other hand, importance of materials which are obtained by mixing textile fibers and materials with polymers, in other words the importance of composite materials is gradually increasing. Composite materials are one of the application area in which technical textiles are used as reinforcement materials. Textile reinforced composites are composed of textile reinforcement and a coupling matrix component. This description defines a wide range of materials from load application to various industrial sector and actually textile reinforced composites are used in engineering applications until 1970s. Composite pipes, one of the areas where textile reinforcements are used, are widely used in many engineering applications including aerospace, automotive, infrastructure, pressure tank, mainly in oil and natural gas industry. The studies about textile reinforced composite pipes are generally focused on filament winding method. Nevertheless, this method has some disadvantages and these disadvantages were detailed in following chapters. In this project, it was aimed to develop tubular woven preforms that can be used as textile reinforcement in composite pipe and to compare the obtained composite pipe with the conventional filament winding method. In this project, tube woven preform reinforced composite pipes, which are expected to exhibit superior performance than composite pipes obtained by filament winding method, have been developed. The developed composite pipes were compared with filament wound composite pipes of the same diameter in terms of axial and transverse compression properties. Advantages and disadvantages of the new developed pipe were compared to traditional filament winding pipes and evaluated.
