Evaluation of the relationship between the diagnostic criteria of sarcopenia and ultrasonographic masseter muscle findings in older sarcopenic patients

Project no. 20601 · Status: Kapanmış · 2020

Summary

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the ultrasonographic findings of the masseter muscle and diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia in patients over 60 years of age.

Materials and Methods: Patients over 60 years of age admitted to the geriatric outpatient clinic were included in this study. Comprehensive geriatric assessments were recorded. The European Working Group of Sarcopenia in Older People2 criteria were used to evaluate sarcopenia. Thresholds for low hand grip strength were accepted as 22 kg for women and 32 kg for men. Masseter muscle thickness was measured bilaterally by ultrasonographic method, and grouped into 3 types according to band appearances. Dental conditions were evaluated according to the Eichner index.

Results: Fourty-six participants (median age 73 (61-101) were included in the study (50% possible sarcopenic, 30.4% sarcopenic). Adjusted for gender, the right, left and mean masseter thicknesses were significantly lower in those with high SARC-F scores compared to the controls (p=0.038, p=0.041 and p=0.029, respectively). Mean thickness, the distribution of Eichner groups, right and left masseter ultrasonographic types were similar in all groups compared to controls (p˃0,05). The mean masseter muscle thickness was correlated with appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM), calf circumference and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL).

Conclusion: There is no difference in the possible sarcopenia, sarcopenia, low ASMM and low gait speed groups in terms of masseter muscle thickness, Eichner index and masseter muscle types compared to controls. The mean masseter thickness is lower in those with high SARC-F scores. In addition, masseter muscle thickness is associated with ASMM, calf circumference and IADL.
