Polymer-based dental composite materials, their characterization and properties

Project no. 23995 · Status: Kapanmış · 2022

Summary

Amalgam fillings containing silver, tin, mercury and copper 19.it was started to be used for dental purposes at the end of the century. However, this method of use has caused controversy as the amount of mercury used in amalgam can be harmful and cause various health problems. Composite fillings have been developed to overcome this problem. Today, composite fillings are widely used in dental fillings, as they can imitate the original color and texture of the patient's tooth with the addition of different fillers. Composite is the combination of two or more materials in appropriate combinations with the aim of providing better properties. The polymer-based composite used as a dental filler is usually a material consisting of three components such as organic material (resin matrix), inorganic material (fillers) and bonding agent.

Research of dental composite materials continues to be an important field of study, both because of their responses to strength and aesthetic expectations, as well as because they are easy to work with and relatively inexpensive.

Nanoparticles (fillers) used as filling materials in dental composites improve the properties of the composite such as elastic modulus, bending strength, tensile strength, polymerization shrinkage. Traditional fillers have been used up to 87% in commercial products, up to 70% in academic studies, and attempts have been made to create composite materials with the desired properties. Apart from these studies conducted with traditional fillers, there is a small number of literature in which nanokils are used as filling materials.

In light of this information, in this study, it was aimed to use clay, a cheap and easily available material, as a filling material to develop polymer-based composites, which are often used in the dental sector. Clay is planned to be used as a filler, i.e. inorganic particle, in polymer-based dental composite as an alternative to traditional filling materials due to its healing properties of composite structure and the limited number of studies conducted. For this purpose, a material that can contribute both economically and in terms of abundance will be created according to existing filling materials (such as silica, alumina, zirconia). It is aimed to create a material with better properties than the properties of the fillers existing in the literature by combining all the components in the appropriate proportions.

The clay to be used will be nano-sized clay produced from clay mineral and will be combined with raw materials such as monomer, initiator, accelerator. In this way, the use of a cheap resource that exists in our country will be prioritized. In addition, with the product to be obtained in this way, a material that is primarily intended for use in student practices at Dentistry Faculties and at the same time has commercial properties will be produced.

In the studies, the montmorillonite clay selected as a particle for the inorganic phase of the composite will be mixed with the organic phase (resin) part, which contains two or more monomers and is mixed in a separate place. A magnetic mixer will be used to mix the organic phase added to the initiator and accelerator, or manual mixing will be performed. Montmorillonite clay will be added to the monomer mixture bit by bit and distributed homogeneously at a certain time and temperature (50-70°C) by manual and then mechanical or magnetic mixing method. After the homogeneous distribution of the particle in the organic phase is ensured, the composite will be obtained and characterizations of both the starting materials and the prepared composite will be made using some methods (TGA, DSC, SEM, FT-IR, AFM, XRD). Later, it will be checked whether the resulting composite provides the desired properties for dental applications. For this purpose, firstly, the composite Led curing (polymerization) device will be polymerized with visible light and then its mechanical strength, polymerization shrinkage, curing depth, water absorption and solubility, compliance with the desired standard of properties such as radiopacity will be checked.

The duration of the project is planned as 36 months. The duration of the work packages are specified in the work -time schedule.
