The Paleogeography and Geoarheology of Aegean Coasts on The Samples of Klazomenai-Limantepe, Çeşme Bağlararası, Panaztepe and Tepekule (Smyrna)

Project no. 950 · Status: Kapanmış · 2017

Summary

Abstract Changes in the sea level and coastline in the Holocene had a significant impact on archaeological settlements, especially near the coast. The coastal line, which moves towards the land with sea level rise, has created bays and bays especially suitable for use as settlements and harbors. The settlements established on these coasts had positive natural environmental characteristics in the early periods, but the sea level rise stopped and the shallow sea sections connected to the alluvial land were filled and the coastline progressed seaward, and this time they lost their harbor functions. Traces and evidence of such natural environmental changes are hidden in the young alluvial deposits in these areas. In order to understand these developments, it is necessary to examine young deposits with core drillings. Our coastal and alluvial geomorphology studies based on the core drillings and analysis of these regions in the vicinity of Klazomenai-Liman Tepe, Çeşme Bağlıca and Tepekule (Smyrna-Bayraklı) on the shores of İzmir Bay and its vicinity, which constitute the subject of the project, shed light on the paleogeography and geoarcheology of these regions. Our project report consists of 4 sections including our researches in these areas. Keywords: İzmir; Urla; Çeşme; Bornova; Klazomenai-Liman Tepe; Çeşme Bağlararası; Tepekule (Smyrna-Bayraklı); Holocene; Neolithic; Paleogeography; Geoarcheology
