Project no. 23240 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2021
Summary

Aim: Tooth decay is one of the main problems affecting oral and dental health. Although a relationship between vitaminD deficiency and dental caries has been reported in the literature, the results are inconsistent. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between dental caries and 25-hydroxyvitaminD levels and vitaminD receptor gene variants.

Methods: Systemically healthy 128 children aged 3-6 years, 64 caries free and 64 with caries are included to study. The children's parents were asked survey questions about their children's oral and dental health, oral hygiene and eating habits and the answers were recorded. The blood samples of the children were taken in addition to the routinely requested biochemistry tests, the serum 25-hydroxyvitaminD levels of the children were measured. Intraoral examinations were performed and dmft index values were recorded. All data were statistically analyzed. In addition, genetic testing was performed with Sanger sequencing method and VDR gene variations were examined for 26 children.

Results: VitaminD levels were found to be relatively low in the caries group however no statistically significant relationship was found between the caries-free and caries groups and vitaminD levels. No mutations were detected. ApaI, FokI and TaqI polymorphisms detected on the VDR gene were seen at similar rates in caries-free and caries individuals.

Conclusions: According to the rseult of this study, a direct relationship cannot be established between dental caries and vitaminD deficiency. It is recommended that more studies be conducted in this area and different evaluations should be made in terms of factors affecting caries formation.
