Summary
Homogeneous catalysts are the catalysts that become more important in industry particularly in the area of pharmaceutical and polymer industry and have greater selectivity and milder conditions compared with heterogeneous catalysts. In homogeneous catalysis, the catalyst mixes into the reaction mixture, allowing a very high degree of interaction between catalyst and reactant molecules. More recently, studies have shown that the electronic interactions between two metal atoms have affected the catalytic properties. In addition, ligands play an important role in homogeneous catalysis because of the fact that ligand types affects complex stability and solubility. The main goal of this thesis is the synthesis of mono- and bimetallic complexes which have N,O - donor ligand properties, investigation and development of their catalytic activities. This thesis contains three parts. At first, information and studies about the ruthenium – arene complexes, the application area of N,O – donor ligands, transfer hydrogenation and ? - alkylation reaction from the literature were given. The second part consist of the experimental studies about the synthesis of the desired complexes. In the third part, the characterization of the synthesized complexes and their cataltytic properties were discussed. Mono- and bi-metallic complexes were synthesized from the reaction of ligands (1a-e) that contain N,O-donor with neutral metal salts [MCl2(arene)]2 (M= Ru, Ir; arene = p-cymene, Cp*) by binding with nitrogen atoms (N?O), respectively. Complexes were prepared from the interaction of the related ligand and neutral metal salts in acetonitrile and the presence of triethylamine at the room temperature. The catalytic properties of the complexes were investigated in the transfer hydrogenation reaction. Ir1c has been found that the most active complex among the synthesized complexes. The Ir(III) complexes gave higher yields in a shorter time than the Ru(II) complexes in the Transfer Hydrogenation reaction. Same complexes were tested in the ? – alkylation reaction and the results obtained with the Ir(III) complexes shown that the ketone ratio was higher than the alcohol ratio.
