Design of Magnesium-Based Functional Materials with Electromagnetic Shielding Properties Using by Powder Metallurgy Method

Project no. 29730 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2023

Summary

The scope of the project is to produce lightweight functional materials with high electromagnetic shielding properties. Magnesium, known as the lightest metal, will serve as the fundamental basis for this design. To achieve electromagnetic shielding functionality, different microstructures will be developed to provide various shielding mechanisms, namely reflection, absorption, and transmission. For the development of these microstructures, mechanical milling (MM) and field-assisted sintering technique (FAST) will be employed under different processing parameters. The produced microstructures will be characterized and imaged, and the electrical, magnetic, and electromagnetic properties, as well as the electromagnetic shielding performances of the developed materials, will be systematically measured.

As a result of the project, a heterogeneous functional electromagnetic shielding material design, tailored to meet the requirements of electromagnetic shielding through multiple layers, will be developed. With this heterogeneous material design, the project aims to identify the microstructures necessary for reflecting or absorbing electromagnetic waves. The identification of such microstructures is expected to pave the way for the development of more efficient, lightweight, and application-specific electromagnetic shielding materials. These outcomes will be particularly pioneering for applications in the defense industry, including radar technologies and stealth air and land vehicles, as well as in everyday electronic devices that generate electromagnetic waves.
