Summary

The ancient city of Aizanoi, located in the Çavadarhisar district of Kütahya, has been a centre of interest for archaeologists, ancient historians and epigraphers since the early 1800s. It is possible to say that the archaeological and epigraphic studies carried out in the Aizanitis Region, which covers the city and its immediate surroundings, have continued until today without losing anything of its importance. Located in the north-west of the Phrygia region of antiquity, in the neighbouring region with Lydia, Aizanoi appears as a highly developed city in the Roman Imperial Age. With its stadion-theatre complex, which is the only example in Anatolia, the temple of Zeus, and the inscription about the first fight against inflation in history, which was found in the fish market (macellum) of the city, it also has a position that distinguishes it from the cities in its region. Thanks to the marble quarries nearby, the city had easy and inexpensive access to marble and produced a large amount of inscriptions. Until today, more than 1000 inscriptions have been published from the city and its neighbourhood. These inscriptions provide important information about the history of the city and the region.

As of 2021, I have taken part in the Aizanoi Excavations, which started to be carried out by Prof. Dr. Gökhan Coşkun, a faculty member of Kütahya Dumlupınar University Department of Archaeology, as a team member responsible for inscriptions. Even the inscriptions uncovered during the excavations in the first season constitute data that provide important information not only in terms of quantity but also with their content. We aim to study and publish the inscriptions of Aizanoi in their entirety.
