Evaluation of the Role of Respiratory Tract Viruses in Patients with Thromboembolic Events
Project no. 32663 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2025
Summary

Thromboembolic events are a significant cause of mortality and morbidity in adult patients. It has long been known that viral upper and lower respiratory tract infections predispose to thromboembolic events, a topic that has come to the forefront, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Even in patients receiving prophylactic anticoagulants during the COVID-19 pandemic, a significantly increased risk of pulmonary thromboembolism was observed. This has been associated with increased hypercoagulant activity and endothelial damage responsible for microvascular thrombosis. (1) The aim of this study is to prospectively evaluate the frequency of concomitant respiratory tract infections in patients followed up in the Pulmonology and Neurology clinics of our hospital due to pulmonary thromboembolism or ischemic cerebrovascular events, and to investigate other risk factors through subgroup analysis. There are a limited number of studies in the literature on this topic, particularly in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular events. It was planned to include 100 patients in the study and to have a study duration of 12 months. Nasopharyngeal swab samples will be collected from patients for respiratory tract multiplex PCR analysis and processed in the microbiology laboratory. The data obtained at the end of the study will be entered into the SPSS program and statistically analyzed.

1- Poor, Hooman D.
