Summary

Skin damage is a multifaceted process that occurs as a result of a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Skin is the main defensive barrier in the body against a wide range of environmental factors and is responsible for maintaining body homeostasis, defense and repair. It is known that exposure to internal and external factors activates many molecular processes that damage the skin structure.

Visible light wavelengths penetrate into the deepest parts of the dermis, reaching different skin cells and inducing oxidative stress, damage and dysfunction in the cell, causing premature signs of photo-aging. High-energy visible (HEV) light, called blue light with a wavelength of 400-500 nm, which is thought to contribute to photo-aging, has been shown to induce signs of aging.

The destructive effects of free radicals caused by oxidative stress can only be reduced with the help of antioxidants. Antioxidants play a very important role in protecting and maintaining health and are also integral components of cosmetic products. The use of antioxidants is difficult to use in the formulation due to stability problems. The use of liposomes is one of the most effective solutions to preserve antioxidants and expand their applicability to cosmetics.

During storage, liposomes may experience stability issues such as membrane fusion, aggregation, and leakage of encapsulated material. Additionally, phospholipids can be degraded by peroxidation of unsaturated acyl chains or hydrolysis of ester bonds (Abdelwahed et al., 2006). Liposomal powder formulations are more stable and more suitable for long-term storage than liposomal dispersions, which may allow better adaptation to the properties required for certain specific applications. Although stability problems and physicochemical properties of conventional liposomes have been reported, modification of liposomes using biopolymers or application of drying technique to liposomes after formation have emerged as effective approaches to improve the stability and physicochemical properties of liposomes.

In this study, it was aimed to design liposomes containing antioxidant marigold herbal extract by using the spray drying method, which is one of the drying methods. Liposomes formed by spray drying are obtained as spherical powders with homogeneous particle size distribution.

To determine the effectiveness of these designed formulations on Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and cell viability, cell culture studies were carried out using two different cell lines.
