Sustainable photosynthetic microbial desalination cell development

Project no. 449 · Status: Kapanmış · 2017

Summary

Within the scope of this research project, desalination studies from saltwater were carried out by means of microbial populations obtained from Bafa Lake water and sediment samples. In this context, Microbial Desalination Cell (MDC), a type of Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC), has been developed. In this way, using the microbial consortium targeting two different microbial groups obtained from water and sediment samples in anode and cathode cells, both desalination and electric current were produced. In addition, two photosynthetic microbial genus members were also identified within the scope of this study. Desalination in the system reached the maximum value of 56.52% on the 19th day of the process. Apart from desalination, some electrical parameters obtained in the first 15 days in the MDC system and varying depending on the direct current (DC)were determined. While the maximum voltage was measured as 37.57 mV on the 4th day of the process, the power density was measured as 57.71 mW / m2 on the 10th day. Again, the current density was measured as 13.17 mA / m2 on the 6th day. It is understood that the average values according to the literature are obtained with this system.
