Summary

Cancer is the leading cause of death in every country in the world and constitutes a significant public health problem worldwide. Cancer is the cause of one in six deaths worldwide (Debela et al. 2021). Early diagnosis and treatment management of cancer, which is a significant obstacle to increasing life expectancy, are gaining importance today. Cancer is a complex disease characterized by abnormal cell growth and invasion of neighboring cells and tissues (Jiang et al. 2015). Cancer usually occurs as a result of a multi-stage process that progresses from a pre-cancerous lesion to a malignant tumor. This process occurs as a result of the interaction between the person's genetic factors and external factors. External factors that trigger this process include physical carcinogens such as radiation, chemical carcinogens such as tobacco and asbestos, and biological carcinogens such as certain bacterial or parasitic infections (Kumari et al. 2022).

There are many specific treatment regimens depending on the type of cancer and the stage it is in. Treatment options include surgery, radiotherapy and/or systemic therapy (chemotherapy, hormonal therapies, targeted biological therapies). These treatment methods are quite costly and cause serious side effects in patients. This situation has led to an increase in research to discover effective anticancer agents that are easier to access and have lower costs and side effects. As a result of these increasing studies today, it has been seen that natural treatments such as the use of plant-derived products in cancer treatment can reduce negative side effects (Proboningrat et al. 2021). In vitro studies have shown that plants play an indispensable role in the fight against cancer in various cancer cell lines by inhibiting cancer cells through DNA damage and activating apoptosis-inducing enzymes by secondary metabolites in plant extracts (Khan et al. 2020).

In the proposed thesis project, firstly, Stone Pine (Pineus Pinea) leaves (needles) will be collected and herbarium analysis will be performed by the Ege University Botany Department. Then, the obtained plant material will be subjected to extraction. Cytotoxicity of extracted Stone Pine leaf will be examined in in vitro cell culture studies using human ovarian cancer (OVCAR-3, MDAH-2774) cell lines and breast cancer (MCF-7) cell line.
