Development of a new treatment system for the removal of As(III) and As(V) from drinking water and wastewater

Project no. 20729 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2019

Summary

Arsenic is a toxic element that can be found naturally in the earth's crust. As a result of natural and anthropological activities, it can pass into natural waters and their concentrations can sometimes exceed concentrations that may have a toxic effect on health. Although various treatment methods are used to remove inorganic As(III) and As(V) species that can be found in water, the adsorption method is one step ahead due to its superior properties. With this project, a purification system that is suitable for the adsorption method and can be used easily in our daily lives has been designed. The prepared system is not in the literature and has been successfully prepared as an innovative system. With the SEM analysis of the prepared magnetite particles, it was determined that they were spherical and their sizes were in the range of 20-31 nm, and the content was confirmed by the EDS analysis. In the pH optimization study, removal efficiencies of 90% and above were obtained for both As(III) and As(V) species at pH 7.0 and above. Phosphate and silicate, which can affect adsorption, have a negative effect on purification; On the other hand, it was determined that chloride, sulfate and nitrate had little effect on treatment. As a result of adsorption isotherms and kinetic studies, it was determined that adsorption followed the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Thus, it was determined that the adsorption was multilayered and heterogeneous and a chemical adsorption took place. Applications were made to certified real water samples and high recovery values (96%-103%) were obtained in the analysis method, and high yields (95%) were obtained in the treatment of certified real water samples. The regeneration study of the adsorptive system was also carried out successfully and it was possible to use it again and again.
