Summary

In flexible pavements, various bitumen additives have been used to increase the resistance of binder against the deformations that arise from climate and traffic effects. One of most employed additives is Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS), a thermoplastic elastomer material. In addition to SBS polymer, EVA, Elvaloy etc. are the other polymers employed today. On the other hand, the use of nanocomposites has become widespread in many different industrial areas. The reason for this phenomenon is that nanocomposites may provide many important engineering properties including an enhanced strength compared to neat polymer, a chemical and thermal stability, and good dispersion properties. Employing nanocomposite materials have also become interesting topic for flexible pavements. Within this scope, it is aimed to form nanocomposites that consist of SBS, EVA and Elvaloy polymers, which are the most used additives in bitumen, and nano-sized halloysite and sepiolite to investigate the effects of this nanocomposite additive on the physical and rheological properties of bitumen in detail. In this context, penetration, softening point tests which are traditional test methods, were applied on the nanocomposite binders. The phase separation of nanocomposite additives were investigated by means of storage stability test. The viscosities of the binders were determined with a rotational viscometer (RV), while high temperature performance of the binders was determined by means of a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) device, whereas low temperature performance was determined by beam bending rheometer (BBR).
