Summary

In this thesis, the synthesis and characterization of new styrene derivative glycopolymer monomers using D-Glucose, D-Galactose and D-Ribose sugars have been studied. 1,2-O-trichloroethylidene-α-D-galactofuranose was obtained by reacting D-Galactose with anhydrous trichloroacetaldehyde. The obtained sugar was reacted with 2,2- Dimethoxypropane under acid catalysis in order to protect its free number 5 and 6 hydroxyl groups, and 5,6-O-isopropylidene-1,2-trichloroethylidene--D-galactofuranose was obtained. In the last step of the reaction chain, a new galactose-based styrene derivative was obtained as a result of the substitution reaction of 5,6-O-isopropylidene-1,2-trichloroethylidene--Dgalactofuranose with p-vinylbenzyl chloride in basic medium. Similarly, the same reaction steps were repeated with D-glucose to obtain 3-O-(p-vinylbenzyl)-5,6-O-isopropylidene-1,2- O-(S)-trichloroethylidene--D-glucofuranose monomer. D-Ribose, another sugar used in this study, was first mixed with dry methanol and dry acetone in the presence of acid to obtain 1-O-Methyl-2,3-O-isopropylidene--D-ribofuranose. As a result of the displacement reaction of the protected sugar with p-vinylbenzyl chloride, 5- O-(p-Vinylbenzyl)-1-O-Methyl-2,3-O-isopropylidene--D-ribofuranose monomer was synthesized. Characterization of monomers synthesized within the scope of this thesis; It was performed using 1H NMR, 13C NMR and IR spectroscopies.
