Evaluation of the cognitive function changes during liver transplantation and the corrolation with the dameged brain cells
Project no. 175 · Status: Kapanmış · 2018
Summary
Introduction: Neuronal injury caused by neuroinflammation is the most important determinant of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) in patients undergoing major surgery. Neuronal injury can be shown with biological markers. The purpose of this study is to compare neronal injury in liver transplantation with POCD. Material and Method: This study was planned as a University Scientific research project After the approval of the ethics committee and consent of the patient 33 patient’s who underwent liver transplantation (KcTx) were included in the study. Cognitive functions of the patients pre and postoperatively by Mini Mental Test (MMT), Neuronal injuries of the patients pre and postoperatively by S-100 beta (S100ß), neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) were evaluated. Results: Pre and postoperative values of MMT test results showed no significant difference. Postoperative decrease in GFAP and increase in NSE levels were found statistically significant compared to preoperative values. There was no significant decrease in S100ß levels compared to preoperative values. Conclusion: Neuro protective confronts to the patients during liver transplantations protect patients from brain damage and avoid from POCD. This was shown with no changes both MMT and S100ß score levels.İt is clearly shown with the decrease of GFAP level. Neuroprotective approaches during liver transplantation protect patients from brain injury and prevent POCD formation. This was demonstrated by the fact that the MMT score and S100ß level did not change significantly, but also the GFAP level decreased significantly. We think that the reason for a significant increase in NSE levels in liver transplantation is not caused by neuronal injury, it should not be considered as a marker of brain injury in these operations.
