Comparative Exabition between Soma (Manisa) and Its Surrounding's Current Flora and Miocene Paleoflora
Project no. 22202 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2020
Summary

In this study was carried out for determine the Flora and Paleoflora of Soma district of Manisa province.

Between 2021 and 2023, 20 field studies were carried out for floristic studies in the study area. As a result of these field studies, approximately 1000 plant samples were collected. As a result of the study, a total of 563 taxa belonging to 73 families and 303 genera were identified. The number of endemic taxa detected in the study area is 27, and the endemism rate is 5.1%. According to phytogeographic regions, 172 of the taxa are Mediterranean elements, 24 are Iranian-Turanian elements, 30 are European-Siberian elements and 3 are Black Sea elements. The families with the most taxa in the research area are Asteraceae (82), Fabaceae (81), Brassicaceae (30), Apiaceae (30), Lamiaceae (30), while the genera with the most taxa are Vicia (13), Trifolium (12), Geranium (9). ), Medicago (8), Anthemis (7), Crepis (7), Silene (7), Euphorbia (7).

The basin consisting of Mesozoic aged sedimentary and volcanic rocks, located at the foot of the Yunt Mountain range in the Soma district of Manisa province and basically located on the Menderes massif, was choosed as the study area. Samples consisting of identifiably preserved plant parts and organs such as fossil leaves, fruits, seeds, cones and branch pieces obtained from field studies carried out in the basin were evaluated. The fossil samples obtained from clay-containing sediments were identified based on morphological characters, mainly leaf physiognomy. Each identifiable specimen contributed to the creation of the paleoflora list. Integrated Plant Record (IPR) paleovegetation analysis was performed to evaluate zonal vegetation based on the paleoflora list and characteristics of the samples. Additionally, climate leaf analysis multivariate program (CLAMP) paleoclimate analysis was performed to obtain past climate data based on leaf physiognomy. 41 different taxa were identified from 1153 samples collected. Podocarpium podocarpum (A. Braun) Herend, which is a very rare taxon for the Eastern Mediterranean basin was discovered for the first time in Turkey. Among the taxa identified, Myrica lignitum (Unger) Saporta was the most abundant species. Subsequently, the most dominant species in terms of abundance were Glyptostrobus europaeus (Brongn.) Unger and Daphnogene polymorpha (A.Braun) Erw.Knobloch. According to climate analysis results, the average temperature during the year is concentrated in the range of 10 to 20 °C. In the hottest month, it is estimated to vary between 17 and 25 °C. Although the analysis result for the coldest month temperatures is around 5 °C, it indicates the existence of temperatures in the range of -10 to 15 °C.
