Summary

It would not be inaccurate to state that plant diversity is among the most important natural resources of our country. In this context, it is encouraging for botanical science that studies aimed at fully documenting the Flora of Turkey are continuing at an increasing pace. Turkey is one of the richest countries in the Mediterranean Basin in terms of Campanula diversity, and more than half of the species occurring in Turkey are endemic. Within the scope of this study, the taxa belonging to Campanula subgenera Roucela and Brachycodonia, which are characterized by various taxonomic problems, will be investigated. This group, consisting of annual plants that predominantly inhabit rocky habitats, is notable not only for the apparent inconsistency between their habitat preferences and life form, but also because most of its species have highly localized distributions.

Although several studies have been conducted on the subgenus Roucela to date, examination of the available literature reveals that a comprehensive taxonomic revision of the group has yet to be completed. Likewise, Brachycodonia, which also consists of annual species, occurs on gypsum soils, representing an extreme habitat. Despite their occurrence in such extreme environments, no comprehensive taxonomic study has been conducted on the subgenus Brachycodonia. Furthermore, neither anatomical nor micromorphological studies have been carried out on either of these two subgenera. Therefore, by integrating macro- and micromorphological, phylogenetic, and anatomical data, the present study is expected to constitute the most comprehensive taxonomic revision of the target taxa undertaken to date.
