ESTIMATION OF METHANE GAS EMISSION FROM MANURE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS IN DAIRY CATTLE IN KÜÇÜK MENDERES BASIN
Project no. 21491 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2020
Summary

Greenhouse gases such as methane are emitted by manure from the point it is excreted by the animal until it is incorporated into the soil or another final destination. Greenhouse gas emissions from manure are affected by many factors. Due to regional differences in climate and agricultural practices, these values cause very different levels of emissions and make accurate estimation of emissions difficult. The main source of methane gas emissions from manure in animal husbandry in our country is dairy cattle enterprises due to the amount of waste. There is no sufficient research data that can provide variables to be used in determining methane emissions resulting from dairy cattle manure management system practices in our country or region. For this reason, it is common to use the default values at the continental scale in the IPCC (2006) reference guide in estimating emissions.

In this research, instead of the default values of the B0 and VS variables recommended by IPCC to be used in estimating methane gas emissions resulting from manure management in dairy cattle enterprises, the actual values of these variables were determined through experimental studies and measurements made in the research area. The VS value determined specific to the research area is 2.65±0.34 kg VS animal-1 day-1 for slurry and 1.26±0.14 kg VS animal-1 day-1 for liquid manure; The B0 value is 0.185±0.023 m3 CH4 kg-1 VS for slurry and 0.223±0.023 m3 CH4 kg-1 VS for liquid manure.

Then, depending on these obtained variables, methane gas emissions in dairy farming enterprises in the research area were estimated at basin by Tier 2 of IPCC. In this context, the emission factor determined for Küçük Menderes Basin is 10.03 kg CH4 animal-1 year-1. In addition, thematic maps regarding biogas potential and methane emission distributions of the Küçük Menderes Basin were presented using the obtained values.

Thus, an important data set revealing the actual methane gas emission values of the existing manure management system under regional conditions has been provided to be taken into account in the choice and design of a more environmentally friendly and sustainable manure management system for the research area.
