Determination of Some Chemical Components and Properties of Artemisia abrotanum L.

Project no. 20585 · Status: Kapanmış · 2019

Summary

Medicinal plants are consumed in different part of the world for their therapeutic and healing properties. Artemisia abrotanum L., known as “Kara Pelin” or “Acı Pelin” (Southernwood, in English) in Turkey, is grown wild and it has also started to be cultivated. The blooming shoots of the A. abrotanum L. plant used as a raw material for medicine. In this thesis, the chemical components of the cultivated plant pre-blooming and blooming period were examined.

Within the scope of the thesis, both traditional and innovative methods were used. For example, in addition to traditional methods such as hydrodistillation, more innovative methods such as microwave have been used in the production of essential oil. As another example, samples were prepared by using plant infusion and microwave digesting method in trace element analysis and analysis was performed by ICP-MS. The obtained extracts were analyzed by using different chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques and their chemical content was determined. Protein, amino acid, vitamins, elemental analysis, antioxidant activity were determined and evaluated by using suitable instruments and different extraction methods.

While the data obtained show differences in terms of the period and the method used. The results comparisons were made with other Artemisia species due to the lack of many studies on Artemisia abrotanum L.

As a result, Artemisia abrotanum L. was examined in a very comprehensive way within the scope of the thesis.
