Usage of artificial spawning devices to increase productivity of common squid (Loligo vulgaris, Lamarck 1798).

Project no. 550 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016

Summary

Squids have spesific reproduction behaviors. They hang their eggs on surfaces like corals, sponges, buoys and ropes, where eggs can float. However taking this kind of non-stable objects out of the sea causes deaths of the eggs that laid on them and consequently affecting the sustainabilty of population. Deaths causing by fishing activities at a critical life cycle like reproduction effects squids in harms way. That is the reason we designed an artificial spawning device (ASD) that squids can lay their eggs on them. ASD’s placed to Urla Isles and Ürkmez–Gümüldür areas on three different habitats which are seeweeds, muddy and rocky. As a result of the trials 38225 cocoons has been counted for total from two areas and March, April, May, September, October and November has been determined as the most productive periods. The most abundant reason of this high productivity is determined from the water temperature which is measured as 18°C. ASD’s located at Urla has peaked at May with 4438 cocoons and peak point for Ürkmez-Gümüldür was also May with 6596 cocoons. The constructed ASD during this study would set an example as fisheries management and those of which could become prevelent in other regions of our seas. The artificial spawning zones where has been created for present study, not only example for fishery management, but also start to service aquaculture is undoubted.
