Removal of Bromate (BrO3-) from Aqueous Solution By Electrodeionization (EDI) System
Project no. 24162 · Status: Kapanmış · 2022
Summary

Global water resources are unable to provide the demand due to the growing human population. Bromate (BrO3-), which is produced as a byproduct of the advanced oxidation of naturally occurring bromide-containing water, has mutagenic and carcinogenic properties. There are three possible techniques to remove bromate: before, during, and after the oxidation process. On the other hand, bromate cannot be removed using traditional removal techniques due to its high solubility and stability in water.

In this study, the electrodeionization (EDI) system with Purolite Shallow Shell ion exchange resin was used to removal of the bromate that is formed as disinfection by-product and the bromate removal performance of the method and parameters that impact of the bromate removal was investigated.

The applied potential, feed flow rate, electrode chamber Na2SO4 conductivity, feed solution pH, EDI system cell number and experiment time were investigated. The optimum applied potential was determined as 10 V, the feed solution flow rate of 3 L/h and conductivity of Na2SO4 10 μS/cm. The optimum feed solution pH was found as 5 after the experiments of the pH effect of the feed solution. The bromate concentration was decreased to 1,4 μg/L, when the experiment time was increased to 10 hours and the EDI system was used with five-compartment cell. It has been demonstrated that the maximum allowed bromate concentration in drinking water may be lowered below when bromate removal is carried out using the EDI method.

Key words: Ion exchange resin, Electrodeionization (EDI), Bromate (BrO3-)
