Photocatalytic Oxidation of Sugar Industry Wastewater in the presence of various metal photocatalysts
Project no. 1195 · Status: Kapanmış · 2018
Summary
In this study, treatment of synthetically prepared sugar processing wastewater by photo-Fenton-like oxidation in the presence of bismuth oxyhalide and perovskite catalysts in terms of sugar and total organic carbon (TOC) removal. In this context, the performance of lanthanum and different transition metals (B: iron, copper, cobalt, and nickel) containing perovskite catalysts (LaBO3) was compared with the performance of copper doped bismuth oxyiodide (Cu-BiOI). The highest sugar removal with an efficiency of 74.66 % was accomplished with LaFeO3 whereas the highest TOC removal with an efficiency of 30.48 % was accomplished with Cu-BiOI. The differences in catalytic performances of perovkites and bismuth oxyhalides in terms of TOC removal were attributed to the different chemical and morphological structures of these catalysts demonstrated by the characterization studies. In the light of these findings, Cu-BiOI was determined as a more appropriate catalyst for photocatalytic oxidation processes since the destruction of chemically resistant organic compounds are more importmant which is the end goal of advanced oxidation processes.
