Investigation of the Remineralization Effect of an Experimental Toothpaste Containing Bioactive Material on Initial Carious Lesions

Project no. 32721 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2025

Summary

Purpose: This study aimed to develop a bioactive toothpaste and compare its remineralization potential on initial enamel lesions with toothpastes containing other active agents.

Materials and Methods: Sixty extracted human maxillary incisors were randomly assigned to six groups: Group 1 (Experimental toothpaste), Group 2 (Sensodyne Repair & Protect), Group 3 (Zubio Active Carbon Whitening), Group 4 (GC Tooth Mousse), Group 5 (Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief), and Group 6 (Artificial saliva). Artificial caries were induced by immersion in a demineralization solution for three days. Specimens then underwent a seven-day pH-cycling protocol, during which toothpastes were applied twice daily for two minutes. Analyses were performed at baseline, post-demineralization, and post-remineralization using Attenuated Total Reflectance–Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, Vickers microhardness testing. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS (version 27.0, IBM Corp., Chicago, IL, USA).

Results: All treatment groups, except the control, showed significant microhardness recovery after remineralization, with the highest increase in Group 5. Granular surface deposits were observed, most pronounced in Groups 2 and 4. Calcium and phosphorus contents increased in all groups, with calcium highest in Group 4 and phosphorus in Group 1. The mineral/matrix ratio also increased, with the greatest rise in Group 4.

Conclusion: A toothpaste formulation combining pomegranate seed essential oil, bioactive glass, casein phosphopeptide, and hydroxyapatite has not been previously reported. The experimental formulation demonstrated comparable efficacy to commercial products, supporting remineralization of early enamel caries. It may offer a promising preventive approach, though further in vivo and antimicrobial studies are warranted.

Keywords: remineralization, experimental toothpaste, bioactive glass, pomegranate seed essential oil.
