Determination of the Effect of Thoracic Kyphosis Degree on Physical Activity Level with Pulmonary Function Tests in Elderly Individuals

Project no. 20857 · Status: Kapanmış · 2019

Summary

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: With aging, the degree of kyphosis increases, physical activity and respiratory capacity decreases. The aim of the study is to determine the effect of thoracic kyphosis degree on respiratory function tests and physical activity levels in elderly individuals. MATERIAL-METHOD: A total of 70 geriatric individuals were included in this cross-sectional study. The degree of thoracic kyphosis in the standing position and pulmonary function tests (PFT) in the sitting position were measured in geriatric individuals. Physical activity scale (PASE) was questioned for the elderly to determine their physical activity levels. The relationship between thoracic kyphosis angle and PASE and PFT measurement parameters was examined by Pearson correlation analysis. RESULTS: As a result of the analysis, it was found that there was no significant relationship between thoracic kyphosis angle and PFT measurement parameters. [FVC (r= 0.094, p>0.05), FEV1 (r= -0.079, p>0.05), FEV1/FVC (%) (r= -0.161, p>0.05), PEF (%) (r= -0.091, p >0.05)]. A significant and positive correlation was found between PSE score and PFT parameters. [FVC (r1= 0.241, p<0.05), FEV1 (r2= 0.281, p<0.05) ve PEF (r3= 0.317, p<0.01)] CONCLUSION: While physical activity level has a significant effect on pulmonary function tests in elderly individuals, it has not been determined that there is no relationship between the degree of thoracic kyphosis and pulmonary function tests. It was concluded that it is important to support elderly people to physical activity in order to increase respiratory function tests.
