EFFECT OF PARTICLE INCORPORATION ON RUBBER COMPOSITES

Project no. 786 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016

Summary

Developments in the nanoparticles field cause alterations in mechanical, electrical, thermal, flame retardance, friction, etc. properties of materials, which are incorporated with these nanoparticles, thereby making it possible to create functional materials. The composite material studies, which have made a name for itself with the developing technology, have also led to important researches, especially on elastomeric composites containing nanoparticles, carried out in the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology. In this study, which was realized in light of the current literature, graphite was used as the nanoparticle filler and acrylonitrile butadien rubber (NBR) as the elastomeric matrix. Graphite was incorporated during rubber production process so as it became possible to manufacture graphite/NBR nanocomposites. Afterwards, some material properties were investigated to compare with the neat rubber, i.e. the control specimens. To do that, rheometer tests according to ASTM D5289 standard, hardness measurements in accordance with ASTM D2240, and mechanical tests with respect to ASTM D412 were realized. Additionally, in order to observe the morphological changes, fracture surfaces of the broken specimens after the tensile tests were examined using microscopy techniques. When the results were evaluated, importance of some topics, which can be summarized as follows, were revealed: Step number of graphite addition during the rubber mixing process, some parameters of the rubber process, dispersion of graphite within the NBR matrix.
