Investigation of the disinfection possibilities of corn seeds infected with Fusarium moniliforme (Sheld) with ozone gas

Project no. 1093 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016

Summary

Fusarium moniliforme causes seedling decay, stalk rot, ear rot, and mycotoxin contamination (primarily fumonisins) in maize. Systemic infection of maize plants by F. moniliforme can lead to kernel infection, but the frequency of this phenomenon has varied widely among experiments. The corn seeds produced in our country in recent years have become increasingly popular in the foreign market due to their high quality. The size of the losses caused by seed transmitted Fusarium moniliforme (Sheld) depends on the amount of inoculum found in the seeds to be planted. Ozone, which is a very strong disinfectant and does not cause any residue, is an important alternative to chemicals in disinfection of the factors found in seeds and other production materials. In this study, the effects of ozone were investigated as an alternative to chemical applications in the control of the Fusarium moniliforme fungi carried by corn seed. Disinfection success of ozonated water (6 g O3/Nm3) and the gas form of ozone (50 mg O3/ Nm3, 100 mg O3/Nm3) were investigated. According to the findings, 50 and 100 mg O3/Nm3 treatments in gas form were found to be in the same rate as commercial fungicide, while treatments in liquid form were found unsuccessful.
