Investigation of the Effect of Polymer Addition on Lyotropic Lamellar Phase

Project no. 24053 · Status: Kapanmış · 2022

Summary

This study compares the effect of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP-10) polymers on lyotropic lamellar phases obtained using different types of anionic and cationic surfactants. Three different methods were used to conduct these comparisons. The morphological changes were observed and compared using polarized light microscopy (POM) method. It was observed that the structural structures of the lyotropic lamellar phases obtained with anionic and cationic surfactants differed from each other. Structural changes were examined using the small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) method. The structural changes of anionic and cationic samples were found to differ with increasing concentration of polymer added to the lyotropic lamellar phase. Therefore, the interaction between surfactant-polymer molecules and their packaging was studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The frequency shifts of the methylene chains and headgroups are examined to determine how the polymer is incorporated into the lyotropic layer phase and how the surfactant interacts with the chains and headgroups. These frequency shifts provide information about the conversion between measurements. Both polymers and lyotropic lamellar phases have a wide range of biological and technological applications. Therefore, their combined use, i.e., the interaction of polymer-doped layer phases, is interesting and should be understood.

Keywords: Lyotropic Lamellar Phase, PVP-10, POM, SAXS, FTIR, SDS, CTAB
