PREPARATION OF WATER BASED PRESSURE SENSITIVE ADHESIVE BY EMULSION POLYMERIZATION METHOD AND USAGE IN THE PACKAGING TAPE

Project no. 20599 · Status: Kapanmış · 2019

Summary

The aim of this study is to synthesize pressure sensitive water based adhesive by emulsion polymerization method using monomer, surfactant, initiator and water components in the first stage. In the second stage, the water based adhesive is to be coated on the corona treated surface of the BOPP film, which acts as a substrate, in 15 gsm weight by the Mayer bar coating method, and dried in the oven for 30 minutes at 70 ° C. Thus, the synthesized water based adhesive may use for packaging tape application. Emulsion polymerization experiments were carried out in a five-necked glass reactor suitable for using thermometer, nitrogen gas inlet, drip funnel, reflux condenser and mixing apparatus. The amount of initiator, surfactant type and combination, seed polymer usage and reaction time, temperature, monomer emulsion feed preparation methods, usage rates of monomers were examined on the reaction. As a results, water based adhesive that has 50.08 % high dry matter, 59 cP low viscosity, d(90)=0.486 µm particle size was obtained using anionic surfactant at 2.5 wt% based on total monomer with n-BA and AA monomer balance, in 4 hours reaction time and at 84° C reaction temperature. 13.1 N/25 mm Loop Tack, 4.7 N/25 mm 180° Peel Adhesion and 4200 min Shear Strength performances were provided in the packaging tape form of adhesive.
