Energy Storage Modeling in Photovoltaic Panels Using Inorganic, Organic and Shape-Stabilized Phase Change Materials

Project no. 23681 · Status: Kapanmış · 2023

Summary

Photovoltaic panels can convert only a small portion of the solar radiation hitting their surfaces into electrical energy, while the majority is absorbed, causing the panel temperature to rise. This increase in temperature negatively affects the panel's efficiency when it exceeds the panel's operating temperature. Therefore, various thermal energy storage and cooling techniques are required to keep the panel temperature under control.

Within the scope of this project, the effect of using phase change materials, one of the latent heat storage methods, on PV panel performance was evaluated. Cooling was provided on the panel surface to increase PV panel performance. To this end, four different types of phase change materials were integrated into the panel, and the temperature, power output, and electrical efficiency values were compared with the results obtained from the panel without FDM. According to the results obtained, the greatest temperature decrease of 22.84% was observed in the monocrystalline panel under 1000 W/m2 irradiation when sodium acetate trihydrate was used, while the greatest increase in power and efficiency was obtained in the polycrystalline panel using the shape-stable phase change material, with 96.06% and 104.2% for August and July, respectively.
