Seasonal Investigation of the Relationship Between Radionuclide and Heavy Metal Levels and Antioxidant Natural Defense System in Macroalgae in Izmir Bay
Project no. 20143 · Status: Kapanmış · 2018
Summary

As a result of applications in agriculture and industry, which are trying to keep up with the developing human needs and increasing commercial concerns, an increase is observed in the concentration of radionuclides (Po-210, Pb-210, Ra-226, Th-232, K-40) and heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cr, Fe, Mn, Al, As), which are naturally present in our environment, in marine environments. İzmir Bay consists of both inner and outer bays; It keeps trade, agriculture, maritime transport, and tourism alive at the same time and in the most effective way. Since İzmir is the third largest city in Turkey, pollution caused by human activities has also reached high rates. In this project, in addition to Po-210 and Pb-210 analyses in seawater taken seasonally throughout a year from a total of four stations selected from the inner and outer gulf, the brown algae Cystoseira crinita. and Halopteris scoporia. Again, seasonal Po-210, Pb-210, Ra-226, Th-232, K-40 and Zn, Pb, Cr, Fe, Mn, Al, As analyzes were made from the species. In addition to the radionuclide and heavy metal analyses to be carried out in the aquatic environment and important marine species, an answer was sought to the question of how these pollutants activate the defense mechanism of the living thing. In this context, catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), superoxide dismutase (SOD), proline, lipid peroxidation, and total protein determination were made in the determined marine organisms and the physiological responses of the organisms were evaluated. Thus, it is aimed to reveal the relationship between antioxidant formation and pollutants in a wide range of living things.
