COMPARISON OF BUCCO-LINGUAL ANGLE AND MORPHOLOGY OF MANDIBULAR SYMPHYSIS USING CEPHALOMETRIC RADIOGRAPHY AND DENTAL VOLUMETRIC TOMOGRAPHY
Project no. 346 · Status: Kapanmış · 2017
Summary
The aim of this study was to compare the buccal, lingual and tooth inclination angles as well as buccal, lingual cortical and total bone thickness measurements of mandibular symphysis region using cephalometric radiography (CR) and dental volumetric tomography (DVT) images. One-hundred patients requiring both CR and DVT exposures for various reasons were incuded in the study. Parameters defining morphological characteristics of symphyseal region and particularly important for implant planning such as buccal, lingual- and tooth-inclination angles as well as buccal & lingual cortical and total bone thickness measurements were performed on all images. While magnification correction was made on CR measurements, DVT measurements were used directly. Comparison of measurements and the imaging methods were done using paired- and Wilcoxon t- tests. All measurements other than the lingual cortical bone thickness were normally distributed. Difference was found in the measurements of two imaging methods in buccal and tooth-inclination angles as well as buccal cortical and total bone thicknesses (p <0.05). However, no difference was obtained in lingual-inclination angle and lingual bone thickness measurements (p> 0. 05). Although, CR is reliable for measurements of lingual-inclination angle and lingual cortical bone thickness, it is not accurate in determining the buccal and tooth-inclination angles and total bone thickness measurements of the symphysis area. Therefore; the evaluation using DVT is particularly recommended for the evaluation of symphyseal area before implant and/or graft surgeries.
