Summary

Ropes are textile structures that find use in maritime, sports, agriculture, construction, and defense fields. Historically, ropes made of natural fibers such as flax, hemp, jute, and sisal, have been replaced by ropes made of synthetic fibers today. There are rope designs with very different properties and material combinations according to the place of use. One of the most important problems rope manufacturers face is determining rope performance. In this study, the abrasive surface and conditions of the ropes in actual use were created using ropes of different raw materials and structures. Their performances were examined according to their wear characteristics.

Using a prototype abrasion test device designed by ASTM D 6770 standard, sanding surface, angle iron, and concrete block surface were selected as abrasive, in addition to the hexagonal bar surface specified in the standard. In addition, a selected rope type, in addition to other abrasive surfaces, was tested with a tank with a grooved roller in a brine-filler and dry. The results were evaluated by three different evaluation methods: loss of strength after abrasion (%), amount of debris generated during abrasion (mg), and visual evaluation of surface damage compared to the reference sample. After abrasion, the rope performances were compared by subjective visual evaluation as well as breaking strength (kN), elongation at break (%), and debris amount (mg). As a result of the study, the highest debris formation (weight loss) in all rope structures occurred on the concrete surface, while the highest strength loss (%) occurred on the sanded surface. The results showed that three different evaluation methods gave consistent results with each other. In addition to determining of the strength loss values (%) after abrasion to evaluate the rope performance and decide on its suitability for the place of use, examinations in the form of evaluation of the amount of debris and surface damage will also help rope design.
